Visitors throng the Malaysian night market yesterday
Malaysians in Qatar yesterday had a taste of home at a traditional night market featuring the cuisines of all 14 states of their country.
The event, Pasar Malam 2010, was held at the Malaysian embassy grounds.
This was the second time the night market was held in Qatar.
It was organised by the Malaysian Association in Qatar (MAQ) and women’s association Perwakilan in co-operation with the Malaysian embassy.
Twenty stalls manned by housewives sold homemade food and traditional delicacies of Indian, Chinese and Malaysian origin.
The staple Satay, a main dish of beef or chicken marinated in lemongrass served with tomato rice, and an array of
other dishes were on offer.
Speaking to Gulf Times, Ambassador Shahrul Ikram said the event was a way of bringing Malaysians in Qatar
closer to one another.
“We are a very small community of around 1,800 people, so in order to foster more affinity among us, we think it is very important to organise this kind of event from time to time,” he said.
The market was also a fund-raiser for the women’s association, he said.
MAQ president Mohamed Adam Hassan and public relations officer Rizal Kahar described the event “as a very special occasion where people gather to share and enjoy food”.
“This event is being held almost every night in Malaysia, which we all enjoy, so we are organising it to bring the spirit back here,” they said.
Hassan said there were plans to hold the event on a monthly basis.
